SOUR:EVEN:NOTE: Dear Wendelin, So nice to hear from you. It's always a surprise when something pops up from a posting on the net months or years later. If your Fridolin Schmid was b March 7, 1835 in Goerwihl and is the son of Joseph and Maria with many siblings then we are ce rtainly a match. Fridolin Schmid is my great great grandfather known in our family as gross papa. He immigrated from Germany in 1855 and hopped off the boat on the Keweenaw Penninsula of Upper Michigan, known as "Copper Country." This was an area rich in mining a nd a tough life for those settling in this part of the very northern USA. He married Rebecca Getchell, June 23, 1870, and they had at least 7 children( all did not live). He died April 30, 1929 and is buried with his wife and some of his childr en in Forrest Hill Cemetery, Houghton, Michigan USA. He became a superintendent of mines and was the superintendent of the Wolverine and Mohawk mines. The old family home at the Wolverine mine location is now a bed and breakfast lodging. One of his niece's also at some point immigrated and lived with him at this home. Fridolin Schmid's name became Americanized as Fred Smith and this is how it is shown in the 1880 US census. My oral family history says that he was not married when he arrived in this country at age 20 but he certainly may have been married. Looking forward to sharing with you any family info you might like to have as best I have it. Which of his siblings do you descend from and where are you located? I live just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Best regards, Nancy |

SOUR:EVEN:NOTE: Dear Wendelin, Please be patient with me and my computer. I've been off line for a few days due to computer virus and weather issues. We had quite a winter storm here on Friday with sleet, snow and blizzard winds. My computer provider shut down due to lightening strikes. I did get your last email but did have some trouble with the files as my system does not do well with adobe. If you want to send me new emails this is usually the best address. I will try to look for Fridolin's niece name, I want to say Maria Hemphill but am not sure. It is in some papers that my Mom has and I will look over Christmas when I visit her. I would be interested to know why Fridolin immigrated to America and if you know what port and ship he immigrated on? I am also interested in that he may have been married when he came. Unfortunately the part of Michigan which he immigrated to in 1855 did not start keeping formal records until 1867. But now that I know of the possibility, I can check to see if there is any information on her death. Do you have a name for her? I don't know how familiar you are with USA geography but you may be interested to know that Fridolin immigrated to Copper Harbor Michigan which is on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He settled in the area of Eagle Harbor where he began working at the copper mines. This area of Michigan is Keweenaw county in Michigan and is on the northern most peninsula of the Upper Peninsula that borders Lake Superior. The Canadian border is on the opposite side of Lake Superior. It was a frontier area dominated by miners opening up the area and many of the immigrants in the early years did not spend winters there due to the harsh environment. It's boom period was around 1900 and the mining industry has died out there now. Many of the old mining towns are what would be called ghost towns and are mostly deserted and abandoned in the area where mines closed down. Fridolin and Rebecca's first son, Frederick- died as infant; is buried in Eagle Harbor cemetery which is quite overgrown but still maintained. Many of the other mine cemeteries have not been so well cared for so serching is sometimes not successful even on foot. Best regards, Nancy PS: I think we are probably about 7th cousins. |

SOUR:EVEN:NOTE: Dear Wendelin, I hope that you are well and enjoying the holidays. I did get a chance to poke into some family records when I visited my Mom over Christmas. Glad I looked it up and that we try to save everything! Fridolin Schmid ( 1835-1929) had several siblin gs. His sister Maria Josepha Schmid b. August 22, 1840 in Goerwihl married a Mr Hilpert( sorry but I don't have a first name for him or a date of marriage). We have written down that they both died in 1903. I do not know the circumstances of the ir deaths or how many children they had. Their daughter, Maria Hilpert, did not wish to stay in Germany and immigrated in 1903 to Michigan where she lived as a member of her uncles family. She was born Dec. 10, 1878( probably in Goerwihl) and die d Dec 15, 1974 In Houghton Co, Michigan USA at the age of 96. As far as we know, she did not marry. She is buried with her family at Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet, Michigan USA. I do not know the name of the ship she arrived on or where she depar ted from( Hamburg?). I could probably try the US immigration records for Ellis Island in NY. I understand that her life was quite busy with family here as her uncle Fridolin( Fred) had 8 children. Best regards, Nancy |

Happy New Year, Nancy -----Original Message----- From: Wendelin Thomas [SMTP:***@***.com] Sent: Friday, December 30, 2005 1:03 PM To: ***@***.com Subject: Re: Schmid family genealogy Dear Nancy, I have checked with my grandfather and it seems that we don't have any further records on Fred Smith. I have found in the "Familiengeschichte der Gemeinde Görwihl" (=Family history of the municipality Goerwihl) that Mr Hilpert's first name is "Leonhard", he came from Weilheim and the marriage to Maria Josepha Schmid was on the 15th Jan 1874. Are you interested in some of the ancestors of Fred Smith back to Michael Schmid (born 1580)? I hope you had a great Xmas and that you'll have a Happy New Year. Wendelin |

SOUR:EVEN:NOTE: Dear Wendelin, I have sent you some info on descendents of Fridolin Sr. that includes much of the data I have on Fred Smith Jr after he came to USA. Like you, I have gaps and some data we just haven't input on more current relations. I hope you can use some of this. Some of it didn't copy well and makes the info file longer than it should be! But I thought you would like to see it anyway. On the info you sent on Michael Schmid, was this all in Goerwihl? And is it proper to call Baden apart of Prussia or Germany as we have in our USA records? Do you have any more info on the siblings of Fridolin Schmid(1835-1929)Fred Smith? One of the stories we had heard about Fred/Fridolin is that he left to come to America to avoid conscription in the military, however, we also know(we think) that h e served in the US Civil War on the Union side as a part of the Michigan contingent. SOUR:EVEN:NOTE: Dear Wendelin, No, it didn't make it through. I expect you are right about the zip files! That's happening to us at work as well. I use an older version of family treemaker, so I'm not too current with my programs. I would appreciate anything you can send along. Our emails have prompted me to try to contact Fred's grandchildren, Peter & Pat smith who are the children of Rudolph. I thought they had some data on some of the more current relatives. Peter Smith is a professor at the U of North Carolina and his sister Pat Smith O'Hara lives in New Jersey. How is jolly old England? We had 16" of snow here last Sunday but it mostly melted during the week as it warmed up quite a bit. Today the cold is back and the wind chill is well below freezing. Watching the winter Olympics makes me feel right at home! I was worried that that would happen as I added a compressed file attachment (zip) which some email providers block as they can contain viruses (like many other file formats). Do you use genealogy (.ged) files? If so I could send you all I have relating to Fred as one .ged file to save you some time. Wendelin |
